When you see “verified UMF 15+” on a review here, that number came from an actual process, not a guess off the label. I buy the jar myself, check the paperwork, cross-check the license, taste it, and run the numbers. Here’s exactly how that works, step by step.

What “Tested” Actually Means Here

“Tested” means five specific things happened before I published a rating: I bought the jar at retail, checked the label against its batch certificate, cross-checked the UMFHA license, tasted the honey myself, and calculated what you’re actually paying for verified potency. That’s it. No step gets skipped, and no jar gets a number attached to it until all five are done. Step 1: We Buy the Jar Ourselves, at Retail

Every jar I review is one I paid for, at the same store or site you’d buy it from. No brand ships me a jar and no brand gets a preview of what I’ll say about it.

I keep the receipt for every jar I test. The UMF 15+ jar I bought in March came from a regular online retailer, same listing you’d click on, and that receipt is what ties the review to a real, traceable purchase instead of a sample picked for me.

This is also where the “no gifted samples” rule starts. More on why that matters later, but it’s the reason Step 1 always looks the same: buy it like a customer, not a reviewer.

Step 2: Label Check & Batch Certificate

Before I taste anything, I check whether what’s printed on the label actually matches what’s documented for that batch. A label can claim a lot. A batch certificate is what backs the claim up.

What We Look For on the Label

At a high level, I’m checking:

  • The UMF or MGO number and whether it’s stated clearly, not buried
  • A UMFHA license number printed on the jar
  • A batch or lot number that can be matched to a certificate
  • Country of origin and packer details

Reading the Batch Certificate

A batch certificate is a lab document tied to one specific production run, not the brand as a whole. It usually shows the test date, the batch number, and the MGO and UMF readings for that exact batch, which is why matching the batch number on the jar to the batch number on the certificate matters. A number that’s accurate for a different batch tells you nothing about the jar in your hand.

Step 3: UMFHA License Cross-Check

This is the step that actually confirms the numbers, not just reads them. I take the license number printed on the jar and run it against the UMFHA’s public license holder records to confirm it’s active and assigned to that brand, not expired, not made up, not borrowed from somewhere else.

UMF and MGO are both ways of representing the same underlying potency, and UMF testing relies on leptosperin as an authentication marker alongside the MGO reading. That’s a big part of why a UMFHA cross-check carries more weight than a label claim by itself: it’s tied to a specific, verifiable testing standard. I save a screenshot of the license lookup result for every jar, so the check isn’t just something I say happened, it’s something I can show.

One thing worth flagging clearly: KFactor is not the same thing and doesn’t convert to UMF or MGO. KFactor measures pollen count, not methylglyoxal or leptosperin, so a KFactor number can’t be cross-checked the same way. Step 4: Sensory Testing

Numbers confirm potency. They don’t tell you what the honey is actually like to eat, and that’s where a first-hand taste test still matters.

I’m looking for texture, color, and flavor that’s consistent with what a genuine, properly stored Manuka honey should taste like: thick, a little grainy from natural crystallization, and rich with a savory, almost medicinal edge on the back end, especially at higher UMF levels. The March UMF 15+ jar had a slightly grainy texture from transit but a clean, rich flavor that held up, which is what you’d expect from an honest jar at that grade.

If a jar tastes runnier or noticeably more caramelized than it should, that can point to heat damage, which shows up as elevated HMF. A jar that’s been overheated or is older than its certificate suggests will often taste different from what the numbers say it should.

Step 5: Value Calculation (Price-Per-Gram of Verified Potency)

Once a jar is confirmed authentic, the last question is simple: is it actually worth the price for the potency you’re getting? I calculate price per gram of verified potency, not just price per jar.

As a worked example (illustrative, not a specific brand’s real pricing): a 250g jar of confirmed UMF 15+ selling for $65 works out to $0.26 per gram of verified potency. That number is what actually lets you compare two jars honestly, since a bigger jar or a lower price alone doesn’t tell you whether you’re paying more or less for the same real potency.

Why We Never Accept Gifted Samples

A jar a brand sends me for free comes with an incentive built in, even if nobody says it out loud. Buying every jar at retail, the same way you would, keeps that incentive out of the process entirely. It’s a small policy with a simple reason behind it: objectivity only holds up if there’s nothing to protect.

What happens if a brand fails verification?

If the UMFHA license doesn’t check out, or the batch certificate doesn’t match what’s on the label, that jar doesn’t get a positive rating, and I say specifically where the verification broke down rather than giving a vague pass or fail. A brand doesn’t get removed quietly. The gap gets named.
